No one rents anymore in NY, everyone buys either a condo or co-op, that way you get money back and make an investment. If you really want you, nevertheless, could rent an apartment for 900 dollars in a nice area in Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx. Try Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, Bayside in Queens, and Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.

you should look at Brooklyn or Bronx area, and they have a cheaper place for you. the Sunday newspaper also can have the ADs for you, so you can check it out.

try to see what you can find in the nearby boroughs - brooklyn, queens, etc. it will be very hard to find that in the city.
