how as in how did they come up with the dividing line? I do not know, that would probably be a series of negotiations on record somewhere deep in the archives.

The split was negotiated at...if memory serves...Potsdam. Truman and I think it was Stalin at that time agreed on it...though i think in actuality the real agreements were made by underlings.

It was split by the 4 powers as per the Potsdam and Yalta conferences held by Roosevelt, Churchill & Stalin. Stalin claimed the entire eastern sector of Germany because he wanted the area as a buffer zone in case of another German attack. The western sectors were divided into 3 areas of US, British & French control. The city of Berlin, located in the eastern Soviet sector, was blockaded by Soviet military troops in 1948 in an attempt to takeover the entire city. At the time, Berlin was also split into 4 sectors. The US conducted the "Berlin Airlift" and virtually saved the western sector from starvation. The Soviets backed down until 1961, when they built the Berlin Wall. The Wall fell in 1989 & Germany finally reunited for the first time since 1946.
