I think we instinctually avoid hitting any person or animal, at least I hope so, so my guess is you'd do that split second AHH!! swerve thing. Hopefully that wouldn't mean hitting a semi-truck : )

What you do is gradually and calmly slow down. Don't swerve and change lanes and kill other people or yourself. Don't slam on your brakes and get your neck snapped or hurt other people. Slow down and hope the dog moves. If it doesn, then you don't hit the dog - which answers your question. And if you do hit the dog, you might wreck anyway, but at least you're hopefully going in a straight line. I've hit dogs and other animals and I've been popped up in the air what felt like a few inches. At a high rate of travel and changing directions, physics is going to win and you will lose.
Also, more often than not, if you start swerving you will go into where the animal is trying to escape. If you are going in a predictable line, it will choose a path to escape. If you swerve, you are going to swerve into it.
As a side note, I ran over an opossum the other day. It was in another car's lane. I saw it slowed down. The other car kept it's line of travel, but the poor little critter darted into my lane and right under my passenger side tires at about 30mph. Interestingly as well my traction control light (it's a Jeep) came on due to the lost contact and/or animal guts smeared all over the undercarriage. It was a mess when I got home. Again, luckily I was not swerving. It was damp out and I might have wrecked.

I learned this right the first time. I hit a small German Shepard with a motorcycle. I would do it again. Besides, you swerve to miss the dog, wipe out your car and no one gets hurt. Everybody wins right? Wrong, you are now the proud own of a single vehicle accident report. Your insurance company is going to love that. Probably to the tune of several hundred dollars a year.
Take out the dog!!! The smallest animal I would swerve to avoid is a moose. I know of what I speak, I spent three years in Fairbanks, AK. We shared the road with moose in the winter.

Dude, I learned that one the hard way. I tore the hell out of myself missing a turtle on a bike. Tore up the bike too. Sorry, but hit the dog, kill the dog, save the people. You can really hurt someone bad if you swerve for a dog.

It depends on how badly I'd wreck. I wouldn't care bout damage done to my car in order to save a dog. So, if I thought I wouldn't die from it, I'd wreck my car instead of hitting the dog.

Try to avoid both, if you hit a dog, you damage the car and possible cause an accident with other cars. That is a sick question anyway.

Definately hit the dog, unless you want to get hit yourself. a freeway is dangerous and unless you have time to dodge it then hit it!
