My friends told me to not have my cds flat but to have them upright (like a book). They said that it will mess them up, is that true?Is their really a difference between having cds upright or flat?

It does not matter at all. Gravity or cosmic space won't change the way how information is stored on a CD. A CD or DVD will not care if it is laying flat or sitting upright. You can have them rest at any natural angle, and they will be fine. Because of the way that CDs are written on, think of them as a key. A key can be in any position and it is just fine. If you scratch the key bad enough, it won't work. If the key is partially melted, it won't work. And when using the key, there is only one propper way to using it. Other than that, it can be at rest in any positon. So CDs are happy in any position. Maybe setting them upright will save table space. But other than that, there is no difference. The CD is happy either way. ^_____^

I think this is a carry-over from vinyl records, for which the advice to keep them on edge was good.
With CDs, If they're in a jewel case, they aren't subject to abrasion or warping forces either way. In a paper envelope or other material that is in contact with the surface, there's a quite small chance that keeping them flat, particularly stacked that way, could do a bit of damage. CDs won't warp without the application of serious force, so that's not an issue.
So tell your friends to catch up to the modern world.

No big difference. However, if you want to mak sure they last forever, you can put them upright. No matter how you do it, a CD usually last longer than the lifespan of a human, as long as you do not scratch the surface, and keep them away from heat and dust.
