I would double check that dosage as it seems high to me. The information i could find from the maker of Elavil suggest dosages up to only 200 mg/day. 900mg/day seems high for chronic pain.

You should call and talk to a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner because people react to medications individually, and you never know what your side effects will be like. However, Doctors take that into consideration.
Also, the labels and reading material should help you know if you are doing the right thing. Read the material. It will probably give you the information you need.

Antitriptiline is a steroid (prednisone) and it is being used, in your case, for pain and/or inflammation. It is important that you take all of the medication as it was prescribed, on the bottle. There are usually unique dosages; depending on what you are taking the meds for. So, yes, it relieves pain by reducing inflammation/swelling. It is a much stronger version of an anti-inflammatory drug such as motrin/advil but without any narcotic. Watch for stomach upset

Oddly enough that drug (trade name Elavil) was originally used to treat depression. It has only been in the last 5 years of so that they discovered that it is helpful in managing certain types of pain; primarily chronic pain. I have used it before to reduce the pain of the migraines I get. But I only used 25mg per day as prescribed by my doctor.
