If you have a computer, then you have heard about operating systems. Any desktop or laptop PC that you buy normally comes pre-loaded with Windows XP. Macintosh computers come pre-loaded with OS X. Many corporate servers use the Linux or UNIX operating systems. The operating system (OS) is the first thing loaded onto the computer -- without the operating system, a computer is useless.
Windows(XP,VISTA,ME)
Linux (UBUNTU,REDHAT)
MAC

Software, or program, enables a computer to perform specific tasks, as opposed to the physical components of the system (hardware). This includes application software such as a word processor, which enables a user to perform a task, and system software such as an operating system, which enables other software to run properly, by interfacing with hardware and with other software or custom software made to user specifications.

The operating system manages all other software that runs on the computer.

Think of the operating system as the conductor, and the application software as the orchestra. As a user you decide what music gets played, and the OS manages instruments and timing.

an operating system is something that gives platform for other application softwares to run. Application softwares can't run in bare machines (that is machine you get from vendor without anything loaded). Only the operating system has to be loaded first in bare machines. Operating system is the only software that can communicate directly with the hardware. It creates a platform between the hardware and the user.

The application sofware resides betwwen the user and the operating system. Application softwares can't access system resources (like memory, input/output, hard disk, keyboard) directly. They in turn ask the hardware to do that and the hardware does that for them.

The operating system provides the core functionality, it doesn't do anything that you want to accomplish with it. The application software is what you interact with when you're actually using the software. WinXP is OS, Microsoft Office is App. OS X is an OS, Safari is an App. Make sense?
