In 1865 My Great Grandfather Sailed out of Liverpool England on November 18, 1865 and landed in New York Harbor on January 1, 1866. He sailed on the sail Ship Columbia.
By the early 1900's they had been using ocean liners for years and didn't have to depend on the wind.
I would guess 2 to 3 weeks.
Your question interests me so I plan to do some research. I love to do research.
Thanks for the question.

Well, the only correct answer is: That depends.
Depends on what? the wealth or lack of it of the individuals, and by what kind of ship they sailed here. Many would work their way over on freighters, and freighters often take circuitous routes. The most common way, was in steerage class of the fancy ships. Trust me, steerage clas was no fun. They were packed in like sardines in a tin, and were not allowed on deck, had little in the way of amenities. Steerage is where the liners actually made their profits. they gave little but passage for the money they got. first class passengers required fancy trimmings and fancy food and actully it cost the companies more than the fare they paid. They had this class to make names for themselves, not for profit. one reason so many died on the titanic is steerage class was over sold. They really packed them in. They had no chance of even getting out.
Some traveled by lesser ships, that would have to take routes that were not direct, they would have to keep stopping for fuel and food in various ports, Remember in those times refrigeration and such was just coming in to common use. most ships did not have it. so they had to carry only what would not spoil in the time to the next port. These lesser ships could take months to make the trip. the common trip, steerage class on a big liner, took about two to three weeks, depending on weather conditions and the actual speed of the ship. Crossing the Atlantic is never any picnic, and in winter, a real bear. We heard about the titanic, but many many more ships were lost that we never heard about.

I think the boat trip took roughly 1-2 weeks, depending on how fast.
