He ocassionaly faints at the sight of blood, no joke, and he's a tough guy. He just gets all hot and passes out. It's always been real blood, or real surgery on TV before. Tonight, however, we were watching Grey's Anatomy and he went out during the triage scene with the squirting blood outta the leg scene. But he didn't just faint, he seized up and his eyes were open and his pupils were HUGE. He just kept on, arching his back with his hands all balled up. Scared the crap out of me. Does anyone know anything about this? I'm not trying to make a big deal out of it, but it was pretty dramatic. I understand he would have snapped out of it faster if he hit the floor, to line his heart up with his feet, but he was sitting in a chair so it felt like it lasted for a minute at least. I know fainting at the sight of blood is normal (sort of). Should I make him go to the doctor, or can this fall under the term "fainting"?

He doesn't remember it. When he snapped out of it the first thing he said was " at least I didn't pass out".

Could be Syncope. The body normally regulates blood pressure and heart rate automatically using a complex system of signals. These signals involve both hormones and the nervous system. The signals travel back and forth between the brain and the heart and blood vessels. The brain responds to events such as alarming visual disturbances (e.g., sight of blood), foul odors, pain (e.g., having blood drawn by a needle), emotional stress or anxiety (often unrecognized or subconscious) and especially during dehydration, or hot temperature environments. The body’s first response to these events often is a release of adrenaline.
This causes the brain to automatically react because it thinks that the heart rate and blood pressure will be too high. The brain then reacts by sending signals through the vagus nerve to the heart and blood vessels to slow the heart rate and lower the blood pressure. Most people’s bodies usually adapt well to
these changes in heart rate and blood pressure and so they do not have symptoms or they only have mild feelings of warmness or light-headedness. However, in people with the common faint condition these signals can go back and forth at higher levels as if they are competing with each other. This causes an exaggerated response so that their blood pressure becomes too low and/or their heart rate becomes too slow. I suggest you bring him to a Doctor.

any time a person experiences a syncope episode (fainting) it is consider a real emergency. Please go see your doctor and find out more about what the underlying cause of this situation really is. Try to find out ways to prevent it and ways to reverse it. could be the difference between life and death.

He should see a doctor. It sounds like you'd both feel better knowing after all. Sounds like he's got it pretty bad with the blood thing..

You should consult with his doctor and give all the information that you just gave to us. The arching of the back and clenching of the fists are symptomatic of a siezure.

Sounds like a stress/trauma-induced seizure. He needs to see a doctor soon before something happens to him and nobody is around.

dear mamme
ur husband is suffering from some kind of phobia!!
its normal, you dont need to be afraid.
just keep him away from blood, unless you want to get rid of him, instead of sending him to his friend to complete ur work or somthing just show him some blood!!
but i think you must check a doctor to make sure he's ok
best of luck
