In Aug 1960 I was a 17 years old who had never been away from home. We took the train to Yamssee, SC. Arrived at 11.00pm. It was dark and we were sleepy. The one thing I remember was the racial man calling was equal by the DI. For 13 weeks the only communication I had with my family was a letter. The 13 weeks formed a life long friendship with other Marines. Today anyone who went those the Marine Corp boot camp still calls his self a Marine. Once a Marine always a Marine. If I had to do it again I would and it was the greatest and scared 13 weeks of my life.

Not as bad as I feared, not as good as I hoped (Navy boot camp, San Diego, '81) Pretty dull, actually-mostly classes and marching. Shipboard firefighting class was pretty wild though. No obstacle courses, no team-building exercises, not much in the way of P.T., only got to fire a couple rounds of .22 ammo. (wasn't until much later that I got to carry a .45 & shotgun)
Still, I wouldn't trade any of my military experiences for anything.

Hell!! I'm glad I made it through it but, man I was tired. Oh, and watch out for the smart asses that want to pretend to rape you cause it's not so funny. They hold you down and dare the others to stick it in you! They think it's NOT gay because they only do it for a minute but, it still hurts and is embarrasing.
