I have attended open weight events.
I don't know what you are talking about.
Besides tournaments and mixed martial arts events are sports. They exist for the spirit of competition, profit and the entertainment of others. If you have mis- matching weights it doesn't always make for an entertaining event.
In true Martial arts weight cannot matter (Notice I said CANNOT and not DOES NOT ). When you are attacked by someone in real life chances are they will be larger than you so you better be prepared for larger opponents. It is none too often that a little dude attacks a larger dude.

because in tournaments it's more of a test of skill, how do you test skill if someone is twice your size?
beside that, do you really believe if someone is top 10 feather weight fighter, he/she would really have trouble beating someone who is 200 lbs and 6'0 but has never fought anyone of such caliber?
Also you forgot Pride has done that type of tourney less a year ago.

It is a tournament no one is looking to go out on a stretcher for a trophy. If you really want to fight out of your weight class go fight in a bar I am sure you will get more than your share of weight mismatches.

Tournaments and real life are completely different. One is for sport one is for self-preservation.
In time, young Padiwan, you shall learn this.

Because in a tournament they are not trying to seriously injure the opponent, also they try to keep it fair, I mean we are not all masters. . .
