i consume caffeine on a fairly regular basis, and i know the effects of caffeine and how it speeds up your system, which makes me assume it causes weight loss rather than weight gain.

but is that the correct assumption? or will I gain weight solely by consuming caffeine?

Caffeine increase the metabolism so that your body use up more calories. You are using more calories in ratio to your intake of calories, so you are likely to lose weight.

However if your intake of calories is a lot more than what your body requires, your will gain weight regardless of caffeine. Because even the total calories used with increased metabolism is still more than what your body needs.
