I agree with Speedjak. Serving in the army instills dicipline in young men (and in young women). If joining the army would still be obligated, there wouldn't be so much whimpy guys nowadays. It's almost an epidemy.

This volunteer army is a bad idea for several reasons. First, the rich do not have to go to war if they are not required to do so. We talk about equality in this Country, but there is no equality if the rich do not have to fight and die also. We could call it, Equality Unless you're Rich.
But in all fairness, the idea of universal suffer is a good one for establishing fairness and equality in America. Something like, requiring every youngest to join up in a Civilian Corp which would last two years or 18 months at the age of 18 or so. The Military could enlist people out of the Corp that meet the militarizes needs.
The Civilian Corp would work on project all over the social and government projects like dikes, bridges, parks, roads, medical assistants, social workers asst. and so on.
The Two years would pay very little, but would have other benefits like educational credits like paying tuition and so on.
In this way, all Americans can share in the Patriotic work of the Government Civilian Corp and or Military Service.
It is not my idea, but it is a good way to solve lots of problems and educationally opportunities and support for our youngsters.
Why should only the rich get all the cherry opportunities in America?

No. The US military is the best in the world because it's manned by people who want to be there and have volunteered for serrvice. Keep it that way. That's all the military wants as well.

I think it's a great idea. It helps to instill discipline/values and make you a better man/woman to society. Every country should have their national service.
