my cat Kasey does this, and so we put another litter box in the living room, which is where this mostly happens. it's only been 2 days, but so far, so good! : )
cheers,
Shauna!

Sometimes cats do the "do" outside of the box when the litter box is full. Try cleaning the box at least 1 to 2 times a week, if not more.

Check the smell of the box. If there is any bit of ammonia smell it should be cleaned out with soap and water, dried and wiped clean. Cats have very good olfactory senses.
It could also mean that the cat just thinks the box is too small and decides to hang it over the side.

becareful that the cat doesnt have any medical problems. worms, infections, and what nots.....also i big problem people dont realize is that your cat can be allergic to the litter. this causes a huge irritation to their paws. their are sprays you can buy at the petstore to tell your cat that this is an area he cant go in. some cats are really super picky about a clean litter box too. i just wanted to mention that if you ever change litter remember to mix the old litter with the new litter and slowly adjust the litter to the point where its all the new kind. some cats dont recognize the smell of the new litter and just wont go in it.

I agree with the others, see a vet. You also need to remove the scent of urine and feces from the areas you don't want your cat to go. I swear Nature's Miracle, available at pet stores, will do that if you follow the directions carefully. Keep the litterbox very clean, at least once a day remove any "deposits". Change the litter often.

Get a bigger box?
Only teasing! You're certain it's not behavioral?
Have you changed the location of the box recently? Or, switch brands of kitty litter? The only other thing I can recommend if your answered "NO" to my questions above, is that your cat might have some kind of worms. Last suggestion is to simply call your vet, and perhaps he/she willknow what's going on with your cat to have such a negative behavior. Good luck!

If the cat keeps going in the same spot outside the box, you could try putting moth balls in that one spot. They really hate the smell of them, and it is one way of training a cat to go where they are supposed to go.

I had a cat with the same problem and it turned out she had a kidney infection. You might try taking the cat to the vet just to make sure.

If your cat is deficating outside of the box and you do not think it is behavioral, then I would strongly recommend seeking medical advice as your cat may be trying to tell you that he is not well.

Often that means they're upset with their owner. I know this from experience. But do take your cat to the vet. There may be something wrong internally.
