I want it a bright red, do I combine the red mix with the bleach or bleach it first only?

Go to a beauty shop or a professional hair dresser and get it done or you may end up burning up your hair and skin or making it all fall out!!! BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!!

EEK. When I saw your question I got nervous! If you are NOT a trained stylist, I would not recommend bleaching your hair by yourself!

I am not a trained stylist but have been the victim of various self-hair-coloring tragedies throughout my life. The one thing I've learned is that any dramatic change in haircolor should always be done professionally.

What color is your hair? Also, do you plan to bleach natural (untouched) hair or hair that has been exposed to color? It's important to consider that because if you have "virgin" hair, the bleach could be too harsh and cause your hair to break off. If your hair was previously dyed, the bleach may bring about a very random color effect, such as orange. (I had to bleach my friend's naturally jet-black hair THREE times before it looked even remotely like we expected. The first and second time, the bleach made him look like a pineapple! Crazy shade of yellowish orangish!)

The other thing is that typically, bleaching your hair is so traumatic for your hair, that you probably want to wait after having it bleached before dyeing it red. All of this is going to be very harsh and I'd recommend definitely doing some deep conditioning treatments to try to revive your hair before, after, and in between the colorings.

If you can't afford a stylist, try a beauty school. Call Clairol's 800 number or something. Just don't do it alone! :-)

Good luck! :-)

What is the natural colour of your hair, light or dark? You need to be very carefull with doing it yourself extreme hair colour changes as you can end up with a severe reaction if done wrong. Eg burnt scalp, hair can 'melt' and just come away, scabbing of the scalp. Another consideration is whether you already have had your hair coloured?
If going to a professional is not a financial option ring up the hair dye companies and seek their advice they have trained hairdressers to answer consumer questions. Most salons will offer advice if you just go in and say you are 'thinking of changing my hair colour too......'. Take the advice and say you will think about it a bit more first.
Whatever you do make sure you have all the information good and bad so you can make an informed choice.
Bleach is very stressing to hair as it strips the hair shaft of not only colour but also the natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle and more often than not a 'yellow' colour. Putting another colour over the top can add to the damage and you can end up with your hair being so over processed it just breaks off every time you brush or comb it. It costs heaps in hair conditioning products and you will most likely end up with having your hair cut off.

Clorox works really well. Just dunk your head in a bucket of it for about two minutes and then rub some cherry kool-aid in.
