I live in a makeshift room with bookshelves and boxsprings for walls. I want a little more privacy, so I'm looking for something I can hang from the ceiling and around the structure as a soundproof dividing wall. the cheaper the better, any ideas at all appreciated.

1. Bubble wrap in between large sheets of cardboard. Paint the cardboard and you have a "wall"
2. Get some scrap lumber. Then get some old blankets from Salvation Army Store or Good Will. Get some L-brackets, short chain, and eye screws from the hardware store. Build panels to make screens out of scrap lumber just like huge art canvases. Use L-brackets in inside corners for more stability. Cover them with the old blankets like "canvas" and staple on the back. Put the eye hooks in the top and hang from the ceiling with lengths of chain. For extra sound proofing, add more layers of blankets or foam.
3. Get a bunch of cheap plastic milk crates. Get some sheets in colors you like from a thrift store. Or Walmart actually has new ones for pretty cheap ($3 for a twin). Fill the crates with anything that will absorb sound: old magazines, scrap paper, pillows, old clothes etc. Then stack them like bricks or blocks to build walls around your space. You can sometimes get them for a couple dollars at a dollar store. People might give you old clothes or whatever just to get rid of them that you can use to fill your "blocks". Once you build your walls, you can hang sheets over them so the ugly stuff in the crates doesn't show. You could probably even find a way to hang pictures from your new "walls" using wires or something.

Good luck!

Sound Proof Fabric

The sound we hear is the sound waves refleced off our surroundings. So a heavy blanket or fabric will definitely dampen the sound. If the music is really loud its not going to soundproof the room from him. If you go buy fabric try to choose one that is plush and not smooth. The less "reflective" the surface, the better noise reduction youll notice.

Lots of egg cartons and then spray paint them
On anther option is to measure the wall and then get on of those great big heavy Persian rugs. They look great and are very insulating to sound when hung 1" out from any wall

Get artistic with it...you say it's gotta hang eh....grab like fifty or so pizza boxes (clean) and sew them together with twine and hang that ish....you want it to be at least five layers thick....extra points if you use some paint and do some sick graffiti or stencils or something....
