yes, they do get easily infected. Belly buttons don't get cleaned too often hence sometimes there is lint in them. Depending on how much skin they can clamp on your belly to slide the needle through you may have to lie down or half sit up. I've had my belly button pierced for 3 1/2 years now. When I got it done the lady put a ring in and told me to keep turning it and not to take the ring out until at least a month. She also told me to clean it with the anti-bacterial liquid called Bactine. (if it does get infected this doesn't sting). I left the ring in for about a week. I didn't realize before how much my stomach brushed up against things until i almost yanked out the belly ring a few times. It hurt for about a week, and during gym class i couldn't do any sit ups or any abdominal exercises without shooting pain. Since your gonna get yours done in the summer that shouldn't be a problem, just clean it everyday. When I had the ring in my body reacted normally to the piercing sending platelets and white blood cells in to heal the puncture. When i switched my ring to a barbell thats when it got infected, but i didn't catch it on everything like the ring caught. After i started cleaning it twice a day the infection went away and has been fine ever since, after the piercing healed i didn't have to do much maintenance on it as i did when i first got it done. I still like it and would do it again because i think it looks cute!

Make sure you keep it clean by using what ever they told you to use, I had mine done at Melrose, forgot the name of the dumb place. I called to tell the girl she used to much skin to pierce my navel, and I asked her if this was normal, because I could barley put the little ball to the bar on top to keep it on. I got some jewelry and it was to short and it just would not heal right for some reason and not to mention she went in to deep into my navel wasn't feeling right at all. I ended up taking it off, was the best thing to do, but it will take up to a year to completely heal. I just used antibacterial soap, dial was the one they told me to use. Good luck kid!

DO NOT touch it unless you have clean hands. When mine was healing I used a cup over my piercing with warm salt water in it ( every night before bed for like 3 weeks).. It seemed to speed up the healing process.

Mostly make sure you clean it daily. Don't wear clothing that rubs against it until it is on it's way towards healing. Don't change the ring until the time limit they gave you. don't play with it with dirty hands. You should be ok. I've had mine for 14 years and mine is fine. But do remember that it's not quite like your earlobes, keep a ring in for the first few years, it can close.

When I got mine done I just used medical meths from the chemist three or more(when Id remember)times a day I also think that not wearing tight clothes all the time helps to let it breathe....

i kept mine cleaned with alcohol wipes. it does take some time for it to heal. be sure to wear clothes that do not irritate it. i ended up switching from a ring to a banana type and it didn't seem to get as irritated that way.

If it starts to itch severely or the surrounding area becomes inflamed or scaly, take it out immediately...no point in risking a cute piercing for a lengthy infection.

Keep it clean! And remove it when it doesn't heal. I've seen what happens when it gets infected. Not nice...
