Values should not be enforced, they should be discovered and sought. The fundamental value which is the base of all other values we might discover and want is life. Most people value life because they want to live.

No one can force another to live, it has to be done voluntarely because one values life. If life is so horrible and painful that one does not value it anymore, one doesn't care if he dies.

All other values depend on our valuing life: our relantioships, our jobs, our aspirations, all depend on life. The right to our life gives rise to the right to our property and the right to the freedom to pursue our happines. These are the values we wish to have in order to live.

Respect, honesty, education, responsibility are not really values, they are requirements for relating rationally with other people. (Obedience is not even a requirement for rational people, it's more suitable for dogs).

If we want to live, we must learn to distinguish what is helpful to life and what is detrimental, which means that we must know the difference between good and evil. That is what a moral code provides. Human must have a moral code precisely because they have values. They must know how to act to achieve and preserve their values.

They can choose to act morally or immoraly and live with the consequences of their actions. They can decide if they want to get the things they need in life by stealing or exchanging their services for a paycheck. One action produces suffering to others (and ultimately to oneself), the other action is moral and produces a respectful, honest, and responsible relation without conflict. That is the purpose of moral living.
