A great place to start is going through the yellow pages. You want to look for one that is relatively close to your home, and if you find one that offers emergency services can be a major plus. You never know what a dog can get into, and it is good to have someone to call and talk to after normal business hours if something should happen. From personal experience, I have had some issues with nationwide chain veterinary hospitals. I am not saying they are all that way, but I prefer the hospitals that are owned by a couple people. I work at a boarding kennel and veterinary hospital so I see similar cases when people move into the area and want to find a good vet.
Ask about pricing on vaccinations required in the state you live in, wellness exam fees, and pricing on anything that you will need to buy frequently from them like heartworm prevention and flea/tick prevention. If you need to also find a place to board your pet if you have to leave, you could look for a vet that also has boarding or is located nearby a boarding facility. If you have friends or neighbors with pets, it would not hurt to ask them which vet they use and how they like them. You are never stuck using one vet, and if they turn out to not be what you want, there are probably more in the area that you can check out. I hope this helps, good luck!!
