I can't believe this guy who said "shower your cat often". Good luck in trying that one! Anyway, no, it won't hurt the cat to drink out of the toilet as long as it doesn't have that blue stuff in it. There a lot of dogs who like to drink from the toilet, too. There is a disease you can get from cats called Toxoplasmosis, but it's only dangerous to pregnant women. A lot of people are already infected with it and don't even know it. You get it from contact with cat feces.

First, have no fears about the cat drinking out of the toilet (unless as the first poster said it wasn't flushed!). Cats like fresh water, now you may not think water from the toilet is fresh, but it is because it is not stagnant. Lots of cats drink from the toilet with no problems. If it is something that bothers you, keep the lid shut. A solution for your cat is to purchase one of those cat fountains. They filter and keep the water moving making it more appealing to the cat.

As far as diseases from a cat, yes you can, but I'd be more concerned about a mosquito bite! The most common thing people see that have cats is ringworm. Yet you can also get ringworm from dogs, cows, horses and even other people. It's not actually a 'worm' it's a rash on your skin or scalp. A disease that can be transmitted from an animal to a human is called 'zoonotic'. There is a whole list of things that can be transmitted, but the bigger concern is not with domestic animals, it's with wild animals, rodents and insects. Think about it, millions of people own cats and dogs and other pets, but the ER's are not constantly filled with people needing medical treatment for zoonotic diseases. Check out the web page I have included under sources, but don't get too worked up about this!

Your cat has probably drank from the toilet. Nothing unusual about that. No, it won't hurt the cat. You are probably quite safe as far as getting any diseases from your cat, especially if your cat has been to the vet on a regularly scheduled basis.

My cats (all 3) are often quite fascinated with the motion of the water as well as the sound of it when I flush. It's funny to watch.

But, I do't understand. Why the cat does not want to drink from its own water bowl? I assume there is one. If the cat prefers the toilet water to fresh clean tap water, I have reason to believe it is a psycological issue. Cats are curious creatures. Perhaps it wants to have fun with the toilet water. Common sense tells us, toilet water, no mater how clean it is, smells very bad. Cats usually do not like things who are dirty or bad smelling. Anyway, keep the restroom door closed all the time. Yes, animals can transmit diseases to humans, especially when you touch them. Clean your floor every day, and shower your cat often.

Most cats will drink from the toilet....you aren't going to get sick from this. More often the cats could get sick if the toilet they are drinking fom is not flushed. There are some diseases we can get from cats but none of them are associated with cats drinking from our toilet water.

Well, hopefull it was flushed. It shouldn't be a problem. Usually cats drink very little, but I have six of them, and when they hit the toilet bowl it usually tells me that their water bowl is empty or the water is dirty. Remember cats are clean animals. Just as they don't use a dirty litterbox, they don't seem to like a dirty water bowl. Go figure! All we have to do is train them to use the toilet bowl.

I'd worry if there was some kind of cleaning agent in the toilet water. Like those slowly dissolving tablets you put in the tank to help keep it clean. Otherwise? Don't worry about it, if it bothers you, keep the lid down.

Cats are always drinking out of toilets. Hopefully yours was clean. Don't worry. Look at what they eat. Cats are amazing at what they can put in their systems and not get sick. If he was going to get sick he would barf it up. Actually, people don't get sick from their cats, and cats don't get sick from their owners.
