I just went through this with my brother. I think the best thing you can do for them is be supportive. Take them out to eat or to a movie. Do something they would enjoy that doesn't revolve around drugs or alcohol. A encouraging book is a good idea if you want to give a book or just an card that speaks from the heart. Most of all your support and love are the most important gifts......

Depending on how dedicated they are to staying clean...I know personally that finding a higher power is the number one thing that they push while in. So, a Bible would be ideal. There are also work books and "Just For Today" books that are VERY helpful when struggling with an addiction. These books have been written by addicts and talk about every struggle they may encounter while trying to stay clean and how people have gotten threw them without resorting back to the drugs or alcohol. The stories give them hope, and encouragement and it also lets them know that they aren't alone. These books can be found at any book store or your local AA/NA meeting place.

Just your gift of friendship!Talk with your friend and just listen. You might offer to give a ride to an AA/NA meeting to help in continued recovery.Maybe go out for pizza afterward .
But the gift of friendship is whats important.

A card with an encouraging message is always helpful.
Let this person know you are available for emotional support.
Promise them you'll be there.
That said, try:
candles
flowers
a plant
a disposible camera and an invitation for a day out together in a park or someplace pretty.

PSP. keeps their mind of certain things. Or SIMS 2, he'll be busy managing other lives and forgetting about his own. Just kidding, PSP would be nice.
