You are talking about First Angle and Third Angle projection? Well it's difficult to explain in words. Check out the link below: the 'cone' shaped symbols are the most basic examples of both projection, and they are usually part of the drawing to let the reader know.
Third Angle: more common in the US and many countries. Basically the "left" view is drawn on the left side of the front view.
First angle: the "left" view (if you're more used to 3rd angle) is projected to the right side instead. Used in some other countries.

Angle of projection is the point from which the subject of the drawing is viewed. to help you understand this, imagine that you are drawing a 3D object. choose a point anywhere on the page. this is your view point, now make horizon marks anywhere on the sides of the page, from your view point draw all vertical lines straight up and down the page, and all horizontal lines to the horizon points. the nearest vertical line will be in line with the view point. the desired angle of your drawing will determine how high on the sides of the page you will place the horizon marks. think of taking a snapshot of building, if you where to draw the building from the picture, the angle of projection would be from where you were standing when you took the snapshot.
