in April of last year my hubby was off for 8 weeks after surgery. During this time he collected disability.........now I never got anything from them that has to do with taxes so I was thinking...no

Not in CA - they are like insurance payments, not income.

Let me clarify that - not on State Disability payments in CA - others I don't know about.

It depends on what you mean by disability payment. If it is social security disability, you'll have to check with them. If it is an insurance claim, it depends on the source of coverage.

If it is an individual policy owned and paid for by you, claims are not taxable income. If the policy is part of an employee benefits plan, paid either by your employer or by payroll deduction, the claim constitutes taxable income.

What kind of disability? Was it paid through his employer's insurance company? If it was something like that, you should have gotten a W-2 form with the "Third-Party Sick Pay" box checked. This is taxable income to Fed (but not to PA or city, at least where I live).

You should have received a worksheet from the SSA to determine if you need to file taxes and how much of the income is taxable.

It's claimed as income but not taxable. It's basically a paper trail.
