Its not how much alcohol you consume that defines you as an alcoholic its the reasons behind why you are drinking.....
Usually there will be something troubling a person that seams to go away when they drink alcohol and once they are caught in the trap of over indulging and the body gets use to it they then start having withdraw when they are not drinking therefore it is easier to just keep drinking more and more.....

lots of meaningful answers.
I would first say that if you are wondering about it, it is already an answer.
Next, it is really not about how much you drink. Number of drinks allow to establish guidelines of health - 2 drinks a day are a max for a good health purpose, because more drive heart problems, circulation and others.
Binge drinking is worse on the health - especially if it is regular.
It is true that some personalities have tendency to addiction - but that still not what makes an alcoholic: it just means that for some people it will be easier to fall in, and more difficult to get out any addiction (drugs, cigarettes, alcohol).
So in the end, alcoholism is really defined by needing the drinks to function, and by how it affects your daily behaviour. If you get angry at others, your family suffer, you cannot perform your work normally or you cannot study, you need the drinks to relax or to have fun... you should see your doctor for help.

It isn't how much you drink but whether you are dependant on it. If you can go a month without even thinking of alcohol then you aren't an alcoholic. If you drink two a day but use it as a crutch then it is a problem. I started on one pint a day and increased to about 80 a week over a period of three years. Over time your body grows tolerant and you need more which turns you into an raging alcoholic. I suggest if you are worried restrict drinking to weekends only and check that it is easy to stop yourself. If you get to the degree I did then it is far more difficult to quit and you only try after being in hospital a few times.

I have always wondered what considered a person an alcoholic too. My brother was one in an obvious way but has been sober for over a year. My husband on the other hand drinks 4-5 nights a week, I always heard if it interferes with your daily life and it is something you can't live with out you would be considered and alcoholic.

It is not the number of drinks, if you drink one drink and can't stop you have a problem. If you enjoy the taste of alcoholic more than food, you have a problem. If the first thing in the morning you have to have a drink, you have a problem. You can be a wine, beer, liquor alcoholic.

First of all I m sure not everyone will like this answer because its primarily based on physiologics, but here it is, we as humans possess the "gene" for addiction, or predisposition, ex: drinking drugs, and crime run ramped in some families, I NOT SAYING IN ALL CASES, but SOME, some families have detriment based on the Biopsychosocial Model, look that one up I cant explain the logic behind that in this answer.
In my family drinking is the curse we are drinkers, it isn't that we drink 3 drinks a day it is that we drink, we drink because its what we do, its what our fathers/mothers/aunts/uncles have done. Not that it is right by any means, it means that when your socialized like that its the greatest individual challenge to break the cycle. Drinking in familes destroys lives, everyone's!
Most peoples drinking habits aid them psychologically because its a stimulant to the brain, if your brain, lacks certain chemicals alcohol "pads" the chemical loss, like chocolate, nicotine, these are just as bad, they dont kill you all at once but they have side effects that effect your quality of life (diabetes, psoris of liver, lung cancer etc..) If people with substance problems would address their issues through intervention or therapy things wouldnt progress as rapidly in destroying the family unit but its hard to catch in the beginning phases. I know from experience
So dont listen stats of some sociologist who wants to gain recognition for his studies and "alcohol/addiction," know that for you many things constitutes an addict. it is how many "lines" you snort, hits you take, sips you take, its the fact that a behavioral pattern exists with consistency and when your consistent that you usually makes you pretty thorough.
when its frequent its a recipe for life altering disaster. LAD!

i dont really think there is really an actual statistical number, but if you binge drink alcohol more than 3 times a week, or depend on alcohol to relieve stress, or to help with problems, you are an alcoholic in my mind.

You know how many when you can`t sober up in the morning to remember how much you drank the night before. I knew an alcoholic who seriously had Vodka for breakfast. He died at 44.
