When I have had puppies due, I would get a 'whelping' box for the mom to be, lay a couple layers of newspaper or plain white paper down, then place a large blanket down. You want the area she is going to whelp in to be large enough for her to stand up comfortably as well as to lay fully stretched out. I never leave the mom to be alone, I always stay within touching distance of her, stroke her head and belly to help soothe and calm her. She will refuse food the closer she gets to whelping, so keep a close eye on her food intake over the next couple of days. I do assist the mom in removing the sac and after allowing her a chance to lick and clean the pup, I take a warm soft towel and give the pup a gentle rub down, to help stimulate it's breathing. Mom will eat the sac so don't get grossed out, it helps to stimulate her body to 'drop' the milk. The pups should be strong enough to pull themselves around mom to find a nipple to nurse on. But don't fret if they don't do that immediately, being born is a pretty rough experience for the babies, and they do need time to settle and readjust to the new surroundings. Don't be surprised if mom gets up and moves around as she is birthing a pup, they do need to move. Just make certain when she lays down again, she isn't laying down on already born babies or the one she is presently birthing. I also keep a small box with warm towels in it nearby in order to put the already born babies into when mom is near to giving birth to the next baby. Keeps the already born guys out of the way, they will snuggle into each other when away from mom, and will settle mom down if she isn't having to worry where they are. Talk to her in a calm soothing voice as well, no need to get excited and excite her during this time. Enjoy and good luck

Best left alone. Observe from a distance, only one person. Don't intervene unless she goes over 3-4 hours between pups. If she's a first time mom, don't attempt to pick up puppies or move them as in make them nurse. She will lick and lick until the puppie has rid his body of all pee and poop and then she will push them in place to nurse. Feed her a high protein, high fat dog food. Watch for her taking too long to get the amniotic sack torn off. Make sure she has a small birthing area that is warm and dry. Don't use towels, straw, rugs for bedding. Straw carries parasites, towels and rugs, puppies can get their claws stuck in the material. DON'T PANIC

Make her a bed in a secluded area of the house where the puppies can be born in private. We didn't and my dog had hers on my mom's extra curtains in the bottom of her closet! Next, make sure your dog has plenty of water nearby so she doesn't have to go too far from her pups. Usually you really don't need to help with the birth, mom can manage that part on her own.
Good luck and enjoy the miracle of birth.

Fix Mom up in a nice warm, private spot with a bed of old blankets and towels and a bowl of fresh water. Make sure the area is free of drafts. Then order a pizza and go watch TV for a while, just get out of her way. Check up on her every hour or so to make sure there are no problems. Congratulations!

Be patient but keep a watch full eye. Call your vet and ask them for advice. And be sure you have the emergency number to your vet in case something happens and there is an emergency. My vet told me when my dog had her pups to make sure she was comfortable and to make sure she had privacy because shed get nervous and that kind of stress is not good for the pups.
