Ok, some people here say he was pagan. Another question. Islam recognizes the existence of Christ. What do they see him as? A prophet only?

To Victorious: If what you say is true (which it cannot possibly be) and Allah is a false god, then Christians and Jews also worship a false god. Allah is the Muslim word for the same God. All three religions believe in the same God.

According to tradition, Muhammad was born in Mecca on April 20, 570 A.D. Shi'ites say he was born on April 26th. His full name was Muhammad Bin-Abdullah. At the time Muhammad was born Muhammad's father was the chief of the pagan worshipping tribe of Koreish. Muhammad's father was Abdullah, of the family of Hashim. His father died soon after his son's birth--while he was out on a trading expedition. His father was the youngest son of Abdul Muttalib and the great-grandson of Kussai. Muhammad was orphaned early in his life after his mother Amina died and was raised by his grandfather Abdul Muttalib, then chief of the Quraysh (Koreish) tribe, and his uncle Abu-Talib beginning at age 6. Earlier, at about 5 years old while in the care of a Bedouin nurse named Halima Muhammad became subject to epileptic fits. The branch of the Quraysh tribe Muhammad belonged to was known as the Beni Hashem.
At the age of nine the boy Muhammad mounted a camel and went on a merchandising expedition into Syria. It was while with his grandfather and uncle that Muhammad learned learned to be lordly, and to exercise power, to fast, and to pray at certain specified times of the day. The Quraysh tribe prayed to idols at sunrise, noon, and at sunset; and they faced the direction of the idol black stone and the Kaaba.
EDIT JB Jews and Christians do not worship the Muslim god Allah. The Arabic word Allah is the word that means god. The Muslims god Allah is not the God of Abraham worshiped by Jews and Christians. This Islamic Allah does not agree with the God Yahweh and teaches contrary to the true prophets of God simply calling himself Allah and the God of Abraham does not make him God. If I name my dog Allah it doesn't mean my dog is the God of Abraham!!!

I heard that he tried to get involved with Judaism and wanted to be a priest - that was not going to happen because he wanted to be a priest and use his own ideas. When they refused him he turned to the Roman Catholic priests and he was rejected by those as well.
He went off in search of his own religion where he either made up his whole story to start Islam based loosely on a blend of Judaism and Roman Catholic Christianity OR if his report was remotely true, he was deceived by a demon who posed as the Angel Gabriel. Either way it was a false religion apart from the God of the Jews and Real Christians.
The man also endulged in pagan worship before Islam and worshiped an idol called, "Allah".

It seems that not too much is known for sure. As a member of the Koreish tribe, in his childhood he probably practiced paganism. It is supposed that, as he was seeking spiritual truth, he later came to belong to a group of Deen-e-Haneef, monotheists "in the Abrahamic tradition." Although he had at least one relative who was Jewish, and learned a lot about Jewish traditions, he did not convert to Judaism. The Deen-e-Haneef practiced prayer, fasting, pilgrimage (I don't know to where) and walking around the Kaaba rock. Then the angel Gabriel is said to have appeared to him and given him the Koran.

Muhammad (PBUH) was fully orphaned when his mother died at the age of 6. His father died before he was born. He was raised by his paternal grandfather who belonged to the Banu Hashim clan of the Quraysh tribe of Mecca. This tribe were mainly pagan Arabs who believed in multiple gods, but Muhammad (PBUH) was an exception. He would consistently retreat to the cave of Hira' on the Mountain of Light (Jabel El Nour) where he would meditate and ponder upon a higher meaning to his life.
So you could say that Muhammad never really practiced the religion of his family, but nevertheless, he was respected and earned the title of "al-Amin" (The Trustworthy) before he was contacted by the Archangel Gabriel.
Jesus (PBUH) was created the same as Adam was, from nothing. Jesus (PBUH) had powers that no other prophet had, the ability to heal the sick, the blind, give life to the dead ...etc. all powers that were given to him by God. In the Qur'an, Jesus is metioned as a "Word" from God, and "Peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he is resurrected once again". Muslims revere Jesus (PBUH).
Do a search on the word "Jesus" in the Qur'an and you will find many Ayat (verses) on him.
Salam!

The Prophet wasn't Muslim, but he spent his whole life searching for God. He spent most of his time in the cave of Hira, months at a time, praying, fasting and searching for an answer. He opposed the idea of idol worship.

every person born as a muslim. its the family pressure which changes him to adopt other religions. that is y when any non-muslim convert to islam we dont say he convert, but REVERT.
About Mohammad (pbuh) he is also MUSLIM, he NEVER NEVER did idol worship.
following verse of Quran is enough to erase all the confusions and misconceptions
this verse taken from chapter 2 {AL-BAQARA (THE COW)} verse # 136. this is the english translation, translated by 3 different translators.
002.136
YUSUFALI: Say ye: "We believe in Allah, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them: And we bow to Allah (in Islam)."
PICKTHAL: Say (O Muslims): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered.
SHAKIR: Say: We believe in Allah and (in) that which had been revealed to us, and (in) that which was revealed to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqoub and the tribes, and (in) that which was given to Musa and Isa, and (in) that which was given to the prophets from their Lord, we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit.
I advise u to read the verses from 124-141 of chapter 2 for more & better understanding.
may Allah (God) guide us towards the right path, ameen ameen ameen

Till he received divine revelations from angel Gabriel, Prophet Mohammed was a Hindu. This can be known from the fact that the holy black stone in Ka'aba is nothing but a Shiv-ling(image of Lord Shiva). Also, the manner in which Arabs used to write OM(the sacred symbol of hinduism) makes it look like 786.
