The United States was the first country to develop Atomic and Nuclear (hydrogen and neutron) weapons, and the only nation ever to use them - The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in Japan, the second on Nakasaki, also in Japan, ending WWII.

No nuclear weapons have been used in combat.

Current nations with atomic or nuclear weapons are:
The United States
Russia
Great Britain
France
China
Pakistan
India
Israel has them, but does not explicity admit it.
South Africa developed them but gave them up willingly and is now non-nuclear.

Iran is trying VERY hard to get them.

North Korea appears to have the technology and apparently conducted a successful test of a small device, but there is still some debate on the issue.

There are some good links attached on the subject...

I hope this helps!

Orion

Edit: Iraq51 - I'm differentiating between atomic weapons and nuclear weapons here. We've used atomic weapons in combat, no nuclear weapons have ever been used in combat. It's an older definition, but the one I grew up with. :-)

Orion is pretty much on target with one exception. The first 2 atomic bombs dropped on Japan would be considered as being used in combat as we were at war with Japan when they were used.

Also there are tactical nuclear weapons; less than one megaton and strategic nuclear weapons; one megaton or greater.

Nuclear weapons cause destruction primarily in 3 ways....
- blast effect
- radiation
- heat that causes firestorms that incenerate practically everything.

Finally these weapons can be detonated as air burst or ground burst depending on your target and the level of destruction you want to achieve.
