Right -click on the desktop and on properties and go to the appearance tab. choose the windows Classic Style...and for the wallpaper, click on the Desktop tab and choose any of the choice... or select none if you don't wish to have any.

To delete, right click on the "Start" button and click the "explore" and go to the windows directory. Click on Windows and a warning about the windows system files.. proceed by clickin on "show the contents of this folder" (Assuming you are using Windows XP) then switch your viewing of files... to details... and sort the files by "type". Normal files like ".GIF", "JPG", JPE", ".BMP" are picture files and can be use for wallpaper. Look for the file and you can delete them.
Another simpler way is by right clicking the "Start" button and click the "Search" and using the wildcard (* asterisk) follow by the extension (eg *.bmp) and the program will find it for you.
Good luck

Unless you have major RAM, you might want to forget about the wallpaper and screensavers. Graphics consume memory. They are running in the background constantly and will slow down your PC. Right-click on the desktop, click Properties, and review all tabs.
