Americans have been eating this way for a long time. I was one of them...but now I'm at home and prepare most of our meals so we escape the fast food. I must say we do treat ourselves to it once in a while but it's not a habit.
Working Americans who are out driving around at lunch time have a short time to eat. So the drive in fast food places are just a perfect place to get their food. It's that simple...the working people are so rushed they cannot take time to eat at a place where it takes an hour to be served and eat something that is better for them.
The office workers...I see eat at their cafeterias where they have a better choice of healthy food. Some Americans bring a lunch from home but that gets old and they may want to get out and buy something..it's the time and if better food is available near their work place.
Fast food is not just fast but some of it really tastes good..but the bad thing is it has been processed and is not that nutritious but many of these places are selling salads now to bring in the people who want a better diet.
Other people have a don't care attitude and think they can eat whatever they please....but one day the doctor will tell them some bad news that they ate all the wrong foods at the fast food drive throughs and they didn't exercise or take care of themselves.
Advertisements on TV and on the street signs also cause people to WANT these foods...advertisements are like teachers and preachers..they are sending us messages.
In closing, I believe all Americans like myself must stop and look at ourselves and examine what goes in our bodies and realize we are not doing ourselves any favors buy putting these foods in our bodies in such large quantities. If we would all cut back and eat more fresh veggies, fruits and nuts and cut back on all things white like rice, pasta, potatoes the weight would come off fast.

The reason that people do eat fast food all the time is because 1.) it's cheap and readily available, 2.) Some people can't cook, and 3.) Americans are always in a rush. It has nothing to do with the way it tastes because I'm sure that you can cook a steak on the grill at home and it'll taste good. It may not be good for you, but sometimes it's more convenient. I try to stay away from it, but sometimes I have to have some french fries and chicken nuggets.
EDIT: Hey Somatek, have been reading the "Only In America" Jokes?

As an American, I find your tone offensive, but I'll get over it, because your question and candor is valid. The majority of problems Americans face can be traced to business -- Big Business.
Ray Kroc (builder of the McDonalds franchise empire) once asked a business student "What business do you think I'm in?" The student answered, "The restaurant business?"
"No. I'm in the real estate business. Our restaurants occupy some of the busiest streets and shopping centers in the world."
It isn't important that fast food is nutritionally sound, so long as people pack in the restaurant and buy the product in a fast and efficient way. It makes perfect business sense to sell good tasting, visually appealing food to people who don't have or won't take the time to eat a nutritiously sound meal. The media has made this lifestyle appealing to every age group, thus increasing the income of these fast food giants.
Also, it costs less to eat fast food than to eat healthy. I'm talking about in the inner city where you can't readily go outside and pick apples off the tree or take a quick trip to the fresh air market. They can factory process meat, potatoes, and bread on a grand scale, distribute ingredients to restaurants, and sell them at a price where even the homeless can easily afford. The trade-off is the poor nutrition content. And soda is even worse. When it cost less to drink a sugary soda than bottled water, you have the state of America. This is also happening in Europe, China, and wherever fast food has become popular.

Yes yes you are so much better than us dirty chubby burger eaters. And you are so smart to realize that they are harmful. Did you also know that the sky is blue and water is wet? Well the reason is simple, because we can. Who are you to "warn" us about what we eat? Do you really care that much or do you just bring it up to feel some sort of perverted superiority over Burger Munchin' 'Mericans. And no you are not the only one (narcissist) there are millions of Americans smarter than you who have discovered fast food is bad, so what? It's your choice to eat veggies and tofu and hug trees your whole life if you want so why can't we just eat a burger in peace?

Wow, I know what you mean. Personally, I don't like eating a lot of junk food even if it does taste good. Most of the time I eat healthy, but today was one of those days where I kind of ate a lot of unhealthy foods, but I could really tell the difference in the way that I felt. I guess people just get into the habit of eating a lot of fast foods, and eventually they start eating them everyday without thinking twice about it.

People eat fast food because they enjoy the taste. Thats whats so nice about america we can chose to eat what we want. I'm sure there are a lot of people that don't eat fast food but many do. Normal americans use it as a treat not a daily thing.

I love Fast food and i would kill for french fries. I believe its 2 things. you were fed by fast food at a young age often so you grow up thinking its ok to eat. the other is you were never allowed fast food when growing up and for some reason when you are deprived of something, it only makes you want it more. Me...I got it once in a while when i was younger and i loved it when we did. now i eat it alot.

Why poison Yourself with Cigarettes and Alcohol when for a fraction of the cost You can achieve the same result and not feel hungry or thirsty?
Sandwiches are only "healthy" and "good for You" if they are actually made from healthy ingredients. Ever tried "Bread and Dripping"? That's a sandwich made using nothing more than Bread and the Fat accumulated in the griller tray of the oven. Yum. Shall I make Yours a double? That way it will be twice as good for You. Will You be having carrot sticks with that, Sir?
