It is a nice thought, but a little ethnocentric. What makes you think they want you there? Would you be preaching christianity and western ways? Perhaps learning their own language and culture should come first.

Still, wanting to help is a good thing....good on ya!

Another well-meaning, paternalistic soul who knows nothing about Africa, nothing about their problems and nothing about their needs.

Most countries in Africa have either English or French as their major language. That's not a remnant of colonial oppression - in most countries there are many languages, and tribalism is a great force, so having a "foreign" language as the official language avoids the controversy of having to choose one.

If you are a professional teacher and want to spend some time in Africa, there are a number of programs that would be delighted to have you. But to simply go over and help the poor little natives - they really don't want you.

Quilts? Spare me. What in the world do you think they are going to do with quilts? Except perhaps sell them to gullible tourists.

The major thrust should be preventing AIDS, and curing AIDS. This is the kind of "charitable" or "missionary" worok that makes the donor feel good, and really does very littlle for the recipient.

Nice thought - but has nothing to do with the real world.

What would be nice if all the petty warlords who run Africa and fighting over power and continually steal food aid, kidnap naive do gooders such as yourself (and steal your quilts) would stop fighting and take care of their people. I think your efforts are better spent here with the numerous poor in this country, or the Hurricane Katrina victims (victims of both the natual disaster and the governmental incompetence) would be better served.

That is nice, but you don't have to go to Africa to help kids with aids or any other illness we have plenty of children who need help/ quilts/food etc. here in the United States. We are so busy trying to fix the rest of the world we are dropping the ball here in the U.S.A.

I believe it would be an awesome experience to go to Africa and help someone else who is suffering and needy. This does please the Lord. I was in the war in 1990 and I saw children made homeless and some were maimed horribly. I felt the Holy Spirit grieved by the chaos. People truly do not understand how much God wants to use people to touch the lives of others less fortunate, regardless of their ethnic background or race.

Nice thought but not realistic. I teach high school math -- Special Education to very needy students. They do not have AIDS but they are very challenged emotionally and behaviorally. I could not -- would not -- leave "my" kids to go to serve someone else. Mine are no less needy.

You don't have to go to Africa. There are many similar problems right here in the States. They're called "the invisible people". There are people living in miserable conditions all around if you care to get off your beaten path and look around.

Yes, I think that would be great. I've always wanted to do that. I am not a big fan of Angelina Jolie, but I must say I admire the work she's doing.

Actually I'd rather not. It's hotter than hell in Africa. I'd be happy to send water and food though.
