We just went through this exact issue this week! Our insurance company said that with a permit, the person driving is covered by the owner of the car. We don't have to add our son to our policy until he actually gets his license. We live in Utah, so it is probably different around the country.

Call before to see what their guidelines are for youthful drivers. Most companies do not require youthful drivers be added to auto insurance until after they are licensed while others need to list the driver while they are learning in case of an accident. Be sure to ask for all available discounts.

Just call them after you get your license. On your permit you have to drive with an adult anyway, so they are responsible for anything you do. So dont worry about insurance till after you can drive alone.
