The thyroid gland controls the bodies meatabolism and affects just about every organ of the body. Hyperthyroidism is rare in dogs (much more common in cats) and is caused by an enlarged thyroid gland that produces to much of certain hormones. Unfortunately the most common cause for enlargement is thyroid carcinoma (cancer). Hyperthyroidism can cause a rapid heart rate, weight loss, increased apppetite, drinking and urination. This disease can either be managed by a medication called Tapazol or by surgical removal of the thyroid gland.
