7.62mm or 5.56mm, I don't exactly know the caliber size, but .. well, the headline says it all.

First and foremost, getting shot hurts...weather its a 22, 38, 9mm, 45 or any other size round. So, i'm just gonna hit this one as a technical question about the differences between the AK and the M-16.
The AK-47 round is a bigger round designed to do massive amounts of damage (the same size of round our heavy m-60 machine guns used.). The upside is that its pure stopping and dropping power. The round enters the body making a hole the size of an extra belly-button and can exit the other side with a hole the size of a frozen pot-pie. It can tear off limbs and take large chunks out of targets. The downside is that it can blast thru a person and keep right on going to hit anything and anyone else past the target (like friendlies...ie. collateral damage). Also the accuracy is pretty bad in comparison, meaning that targets farther than 50 meters or so start getting harder to hit for the AK.

The M-16 is a smaller round with a completely different design and intent. The range and accuracy are much greater with the M-16 (1000+ meters with ease) and the bullet is designed to tumble upon impact instead of blasting straight thru a target. Literally an M-16 round could strike a target in the leg and tumble inside the body to impact the heart or other vital organs. The benefit is two-fold : 1. To reduce collatral damage by not ripping thru targets and continueing on. 2. More accuracy& range, with decent stopping power = less need for up-close confrontation and missing the targets.
In my military career I've fired both weapons and can say I would much prefer the M-16. The accuracy of the weapon can't be denied; and I would much rather hit my targets with sufficient force rather than miss them with overwhelming force.
I will say though that the AK does have its bonuses. The ones I had fired were confiscated weapons from Vietnam that were used for familiarization training and were probably drawn out and fired at least once a week since Vietnam and never really cleaned or cared for... and they still fired with no problems.
The M-16 on the other hand has alot more parts and is alot more technical of a wepon and needs constant care...if you don't clean it after 1 day shooting, it probably won't be working for you when you pick it back up.
So to answer the question again: Either weapon will hurt and/or kill you.

I've never been shot but imagine either one would hurt. Now I have read reports that the M16's round (5.56mm) is capable of inflicting more damage on impact- it's light weight and high speed makes it prone to tumble upon entry, while the heavier AK-47 round just goes right through. But of course it's all relevant to where the bullet strikes, if the bullet is a hollowpoint, how far away is the shooter, etc. Like I always say, I'd rather be missed by a .44 Magnum than hit by a .22 short!

Yes, it would hurt to get shot with an AK-47. Even if you wore a ballistic vest, you would still experience some blunt trauma.

An M16 would probably cause a similar amount of pain as an AK-47. However, you have to understand that the type of ammo used, as well as shot placement will change things completely.

Getting shot is generally never a pleasant thing, and each wound is unique. Therefore it would be wise to avoid getting hit by either of the assault rifles in question at all costs.

I never was shot by a M16, but recent studies has shown that the M16 is a pretty worthless weapon. The M14 was better (also a 7.62 which is a Nato round)! And the m1a1 was even better though it weighed 9 1/2 lbs!

I thought it was interesting that I saw someone on TV from the 82nd firing a weapon out of a window in Iraq. It was an AK47.

Give me an AK 47 any day!

An M16 bullet shatters when it hits anything solid, an AK47 blows it away. In Viet Nam an M16 bullet would hit a tree and shatter, an AK47 went straight though. The main problem with an AK47 is accuracy but I would still rather have one than an M16

Well it all depends on where the bullet hits, if say it hit you in the head or the heart region then the pain would be quite minimal, but on the other hand if say you got shot it the leg or the arm or even the buttock it would hurt like a son of b!#ch.

how much damage it does depends on the size of the round , how big it gets on impact, the velocity and therefore the amount of force it hits with.

It stings a lot to get shot .

a one hell of a question, indeed it HURTS! but i guess smaller rounds could be more agonizing since it would prolong agony. Now, how would you compare of being hit by GAU Avenger bullet and .22 cal air rifle in the head?
