Both analogies fit – it’s a contagious disease because it is passed on from human to human like small pox and it’s a drug because some people are predisposed to become addicted to it and once hooked, they become dependant upon it. Oh and, it’s a drug because it controls children’s behavior like Ritalin.

I would argue that it's more of a drug. Diseases can at least be caught, and not born with. One can only gain a drug dependency by first taking it. A genetic alcoholic has to take their first drink, a pot head has to take their first hit. A christian has to hear their first lie. I do like your contagious argument, because it has spread rampant among the West. I would argue it's more of a drug, but it's a disease too. Great question.

True religion is a human convention to try to communicate worshipfully with a higher Being(s), whose presence most people can sense but whom no one can fully comprehend. In its essential form religion has almost no direct connection to mundane things such as diseases and drugs.

Religion is a bad thing at times because it takes away our thought process and we are unable to make rational decisions.
Faith and beliefs are great,I am spiritually grounded in Christ Jesus and I consider myself a religious person. But so do the buddist, hindu, muslims, etc. of the world. We tend to get caught up in what people tell us to do or ways to act,i.e.-The baptist should do this or the methodist should do that, etc. That is organized religion and not faith.

Stupidity is also a disease. One lame opinion passed on to others whether they want to receive it or not. Looks like some people haven't been immunized.

I would say that it would be more closer to being a drug. You seek it for comfort and assurance of happiness. You are taught to depend on it for a healthier life. You teach others that it is good for you and would like to share it with them. I would not think of it as a disease, because a disease is a foreign intruder. A drug is a self-induced substance.

I think religion fits both descriptions. As a Christian, I dislike "religion" which to me is a man-made institution. Religion is the result of men attempting to explain God, to contain him in a manner which they can manipulate, to gain power and control. Religion is NOT from God.

When Jesus walked the earth he spent much time challenging the religious leaders and false religious ideas.

Mmm... How about we just call it a "choice," I mean it seriously people have to stop criticizing religious people and not religious people, humans have to learn to accept everyone even if their beliefs differ greatly.
