My sister is an expert on this movie. I asked her personally, and she says that "Yes, they both sang using their own voices. They chose Gerard specifically because he could sing."

Celebrate!

Everyone who's answered is at least a little bit right. Yes, both Gerard and Patrick sang their own parts. Yes, the whole movie is voiced over (recording started out 3 weeks ahead of the specific scene they were filming, but by the time movie filming ended, they were recording scenes minutes before they shot them). Yes, everyone in the movie sings their own parts except Carlotta (Minnie Driver is an accomplished singer {she sings "Learn to Be Lonely"} but she is not a soprano, so Margaret Preece, an opera instructor from the UK, sang her parts). Yes, Patrick was the only cast member who had Broadway experience. However, Gerard DID have prior singing instruction, as he had performed in a rock band in his younger years. And just as a random trivia fact, Emmy Rossum, who plays Christine, has been performing with the Metropolitan Opera House since she was 7 years old. Amazing, huh?

Actually, Gerard Butler had never sung before in his life, but he really wanted to be the Phantom, so he went to audition. It's actually been said that when he went into the audition room, he said, 'I'm about to sing one of the greatest songs in history without any training,' and then he sung Music of the Night. But he was vocally trained for the part, and he sang his own songs in the movie. Patrick Wilson had actually starred on Broadway before doing this movie, and so he got the part without needing voice training, and he too sung his own part. Wilson was actually the only person in that movie who had starred on Broadway before. The only person in that entire movie who does not sing their own part is Minnie Driver as Carlotta.

Yes!!! they did a voice over but its both of their voices. As A matter of fact Gerard used to be in a band so he knew how to sing before hand.
