Of course. They're stupid, NO OFFENCE. I didn't mean it that way.
Tell them:
You have post (which definetly works out your muscles in legs), and also you have to lean forward at times, and it takes muscle to jump. Most of it is muscle but the defintion of sports is: an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition.
It has competetion, and also you do have a work out. So therefore, it's a sport.

Yes, because it takes a lot of talent and muscle.
My friends say that horseback riding isn't actually a sport.

Of course horse back riding is a sport. There are many different aspects of this discipline as well. You have 1- horse racing, 2- jumping, 3- dressage (Olympic sport since 1912!), 4- steeplechase (in which the horse and rider need to race through cross country settings, jump through fences and ditches...!), 5- harness racing....and so on!
Your friend for sure has only riden once and on a nice horse and not doing much either as he would have felt how much energy he needs to put in riding.
A lot of horse back riding requires concentration and skills for the rider and a synchronisation and understanding of his horse. The horse doesnt do what he wants, he does what you want.
You friend isnt doing much either...running after a ball, so much for his understanding of relationship in a sport with another animal!

chances are it was one of the guided tours because anyone who has rode a real horse that didn't follow the leader would know it takes a lot of muscle to ride properly and not kill the horses back. and show jumping u have to move alot. i have not rode in years but the horses i did ride would take the bit some times and then ur skill comes in to stay on...because well the ground sucks. and if ur just gonna sit there ur not going to be on long. some horses will not do what u ask and it takes a skilled rider to make it happen... like in refusal to take the jump horses that are not trained for a "monkey to ride" will not take the jump if not give the right cue at the right time... besides show jumping is an olympic sport... i think stall mucking should be to..lol

I have been riding horses all my life. I pleasure ride. I belong to the N.A.R.C. & S.P. (National Association of Riding Clubs & Sheriff's Posses) and I feel that Horse riding is a sport because, our Motto is "Horsemanship, Sportsmanship - Hand 'N Hand" and if you think about it, people that do any kind of sports, whether it's soccor, baseball, football, or whatever, they all require eyes, hands and feet cordination. So tell them to think about it that way. Hopefully that will help. Good Luck !

Sitting on an old, bombproof horse (like on a guided trail ride) and following a leader is NOT a sport. Riding a horse IS a sport. My general solution for people who suggest riding is not a sport is to invite them to the barn. Last year my friend and I suggested that someone come muck stalls, tack up, and then jump my horse cross country. They never took us up on that offer. I've also found it somewhat effective to pull up a cross country or grand prix show jumping video on youtube. Last year I brought my Rolex video to school one day to show someone. I've found that dressage videos are rather ineffective for this purpose, since the person can never actually see how hard the rider is working.

Horseback riding requires extreme athleticism and balance, I myself am a hunter/jumper. And yes it may look easy but believe me it's a lot harder than it looks
