I read in a book that it should bathe Golden Retreivers about once every three months, maybe more often during the summer if they go swimming. I think 3 months is too long, they have a strong odor. Thanks!

If you wash them too often, it will eliminate the oils in their fur...which is not good.

Every two months should be okay....and once a month wouldn't kill them, but definitley not every week!

Unless the dog gets into something dirty, a bath about once a month is best for most dogs. Make sure to use a conditioning shampoo and brush the dog out completely - you don't want that hair to get tangled. When a dog goes swimming it's a good idea to rinse them off with clean water but a full bath is usually not needed.

I would recommend bathing your dog once a month in the warmer months. You could probably go once every 3 months in winter, although once a month would not hurt. Bathing a dog too often is not good for their skin. If you notice your dog beginning to get dry skin, switch to Oatmeal shampoo, it's gentle on their skin. They do make shampoo that you don't have to wash out if your dog gets dirty or smelly in between baths.

My family has a golden..love that dog..hate the smell. i can't recall ever really bathing him but what i know does work is when it goes swimming in a small pool (like a kiddie pool) without all the chlorine and stuff. just straight out of the garden hose, water. it will not only have fun but for some reason it seems to not have such a strong odor. of course, it will have an initial dog smell. as for the fall and winter months, don't know what to tell you.

In the winter, we would "bathe" our husky with baby powder. It took care of the smell during the cold months at least.

In the summer we would always bathe her at LEAST once a month, usually more if she was sprayed by a skunk.

Don't over bathe her though--the more you bathe and the more you're going to dry out her skin!

Another solution for the summer is to give her a buzz cut. It will keep her cool, the smell down, and the shedding at a new low.

I have a golden retriever and I brush her about 2 times a week and she gets her legs and feet washed everday in the shower. We added an extended shower nozzle and use that. She likes it. Than every 2 months we take her in to get her groomed. Also use baby powder especially around the ears. It helps with the oils and it helps with matting.

I usually give my dog a bath once a week or every other week, but if your dog has dry skin I wouldn't reccomend it that often. It works just fine for my dog though.
