I've had many dogs in my life but never a basset and am now considering it. They're just so cute!! And may suit my inner urban lifestyle...

great dog, i had mine for 12 years. She was just awesome, and always to happy. They are somewhat hard to train and housebreak, but it's possible and worth it. The aren't as lazy as ppl think, but not super active either. Just make sure he/she is on a leash when it's outside so it doesn't get itself in trouble!!

I miss my Basset. She lived a long time. They can be very stubborn as dogs - once they pick up a scent, they want to follow it.
Ear and back problems are common with this breed. They also tend to stink.

Major ear problems! (but you'll have that with most droopy eared breeds)
Also, long backs can get injured easily- broken, slipped disc, pinched nerves.
They sure are cute, though, and most I've encountered have great dispositons.

IVE KNOWN PEOPLE WHO HAVE BASSETTS, I THINK , IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY , THEIR EARS DRAG OR ALMOST DRAG ON THE GROUND. I KINDA LIKE A CANINE WHOSE EARS STAND UP A BIT. BUT THATS I. ALSO I LIKE A DOG THAT HAS MORE FUR ON IT SO YOU DONT HAVE TO LOOK AT THEIR REAR END ALL THE TIME. MAYBE I'M TOO CRITICAL !
