Ooooookay.... I'm going to entertain this question on the basis of intellectual freedom and because you actually put some thought into this... strange idea.
Yes, it is okay in some cultures. We don't find that socially acceptable here, but lets say we did. All the animals we do eat are raised in a way that we can be sure the meat is healthy to eat (yes, sometimes the animals are in cruel conditions, which I'm not condoning, but the meat is FDA approved). Dogs in shelters have unknown histories, as well as dogs on the streets. If we were about to accept eating dogs, those dogs would not be acceptable meat by our health standards.
BTW, to those above who found this question stupid, it's really not. The cow is sacred in Hinduism, but we eat it. Most Hindus don't eat beef. It's not quite the way we view dogs, but the same way we won't eat horse.

I'm 99.9% sure that eating dog meat is quite illegal, at least in America. So, no, not okay.
I believe there are many reasons why eating a dog is very taboo in our culture. First of all, many, many people keep dogs as pets. They are our companions and protectors. "Man's best friend", just like the saying goes. Would you eat your best friend? I wouldn't.
There are also much better solutions to the problem of stray dogs. Like, dogs should be spayed or neutered to avoid unwanted puppies being born. That alone would probably lower the number of dogs living in shelters.
Also, as far as I can tell, dog meat isn't anything special. It is mostly eaten by poorer classes in foreign countries due to the price or availability of meats like beef, pork, and chicken.

hi there cause we are taught not to eat what we care for as pets I know someplace in asia eat puppies in a resturant the pups come out from a clear tube from the middle of the table the guess just picks the pup they what for dinner or lunch also they sell it inthe markets seal in plastic bags even as snacks I seen this on a tv show at that moment I wish I WAS RICH TO GO SAVE THOSE DOGS. I would not anything that is kept as a pet i'm most into chicken cause even the red meat now it gets people sick and wait till it comes out the clon meats at your near supermarkets . any why would u think of the homeless first to feed these pups what ever happend to any person o ya destroy the homeless they take too much space is that it well u know many do pay thier taxes even if it is with a part time job . think before u speak I think the poor is what makes a better person cause they work and sweat thier butts off for true loving family even two or three jobs. whose worth more to u?

You make a good point- we only want to save the cute animals. I guess it's not socially acceptable here because we see Fido as a friend mostly and not a food source. I don't think it would even become remotely acceptable unless we were in a SEVERE crisis mode. Personally, I could never eat a puppy under any circumstance.

It isn't- except that our society (USA) thinks that it is wrong. People eat different things all over the world. Horse, dog, dolphins, etc. My friend recently went to Peru and had guinea pig roasted on a stick.
I personally could never eat anything other than the traditional chicken, cow, pig, and wild game, but I have no problem with others doing it.

Many people in American culture would consider it wrong simply because their worldview sees dogs as beloved companions. In complete objectivity, puppies are made of meat just like pigs, cows, and chickens; there is nothing inherently wrong with eating them.

In the USA cats and dogs are called domestic animals- for some reason that makes the equal to humans. In other parts of the world they are seen for the livestock they are... what makes them more special than a cow? Nothing other than the fact it fits in your house. I say EAT THEM if you're hungry.

It is wrong because they are our best friends. There are a lot of other ways to feed the homeless. I think it is wrong to even think about such a thing. A good plan my A##, Think about something humane. These are our family....
