Before going on a date I would make a list of questions and put it in my purse. But later I found out that too many questions made the other person feel uneasy. So I asked the basic and then checked him out thru relatives, neighbors, school mates, etc.
Sometimes they get bored at answering, so the point is just to get them talking, so ask open ended questions. When you meet someone asking their favorite foods is not important.
Ask about his brothers and sisters, and then tell about yours. Ask about his parents, then say something about yours. After a few of these sentences...wait for "his" questions. If he doesn't ask much of you he's bored or not interested, and you can cut the evening short. If you keep a boring conversation going it could lead to forced sex, so it's better you end the evening.

Ask them what they do for a living, where they live, where they went to school, if they're married, if they have kids, etc.
