Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

It is an invitation to all the world to come to Jesus and experience the joys of salvation in Christ.

The above verse is when Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well. He is inviting her to drink the living water of life (salvation).

Salvation cannot be earned but God gives it freely. We live in a world desperately thirsty for living water and many are dying of thirst. But it's still not too late. Everyone is invited to come and drink.

The living water is the gift of eternal life and the Holy Spirit. She will thirst no more for that one missing thing that all humans look for but can never quite seem to find. They try to fill that void with various material things but only the living water will suffice.

John 7:38-39 expounds on this: "He who believes in Me as the scripture has said, From his innermost being shall flow springs and rivers of living water. But He was speaking here of the Spirit, Whom those who believed In Him were afterward to receive..."

Living water is a Hebraic expression for flowing water, as the bubbling water of a spring or the flowing water of a river. What Jesus was referring to was the Spirit which He gives to all who put their faith in Him. The Spirit is the renewed life principle within a man, which, when united to the Spirit of God, becomes a never ending flow of life and refreshing in the innermost parts of the human breast; a constant renewing of the inner resources of the human personality. Paul spoke of it in this way "Therefore we do not lose heart, but though the outer man is decaying, the inner man is renewed day by day." (II Corinthians 4:16)
It is for this reason Jesus said; "You must be born again."
(John 3:7)

He was saying, If she knew that it was God's gift(His only begotten Son) that asked for drink, she would have asked Him for living waters. Living waters is the gift of the spirit of truth that is the most satisfying of anything a person can seek. The living waters that the Lord spoke of leads to spiritual development and
eternal life.

He is saying that if she recognized him as the Son of God, (which he was asking the woman at the well for a drink of water at the time), she would receive eternal life. He later says, "Go, and sin no more." This lady at the well had been married a few times and was then living with a man who was not her husband.

He is telling her that if she really understood what He was asking when He said "Give me a drink", and who exactly He was (God in flesh), that SHE would've been the one doing the asking. And because she asked, He would've given living water, or the Holy Spirit.

The argument between the woman & Jesus was where & how to worship. The woman stated her position, Jesus explained the arguement & how petty it was.
Living water=salvation. Jesus came that we might have life & have it more abundantly.
Living water=Power & Authority. We can use the name of Jesus in any area of our lives.
Living water=the Holy Spirit. Jesus told the disciples that heI wouldl leave them with the comforter. They were baptized with fire & evidence of speaking in other tongues.

"Living Water" is an analogy for salvation. He was saying that, if you just drink plain ol' water, you'll be thirsty again sometime. But Jesus' salvation satisfies us for a lifetime.
