Use a leash or a cable run for him/her. If you use a fence, you will also have to keep close tabs on the ground around the edges as the Jacks dig out of kennels quite quickly. They can also jump a 4 foot fence with no difficulty at all. 2 of ours have to be chained inside the kennel to keep them from escaping. They are a dog with a very strong hunting instinct and thus they will tend to run off. They are also very intelligent and can find any tiny weakness in their containment to get loose from. Since they also have no fear and don't realize that they are small, they are at risk in a country setting where there are coyotes. We have lot a couple to coyotes here when they have got loose from their kennel. Good luck to you, they are really nice pets to have and very faithful dogs.

You may have to put him out on a cable if he's an outside dog. I live in the country with maybe 20 neighbors around me. I have a Jack Russell named Jitterbug who has "girlfriends" in the neighbor hood. No joke, actual girlfriends he'll go and see and bring home to eat when I put food out. My neighbors don't mind since he is nice but I don't know how yours are.
If you are giving him free choice feed, don't. This gives him the peace of mind that he'll be able to eat when he wants to. Instead if you are able feed him small meals 3 times a day. If not, just feed him twice a day.
Also since he is a terrier they need a lot of stimulation. Play and interact with him more or get him inrichment toys.

I had the same issue with my dog - you open the door and like a streak of lightening, she's gone! We got a pup about 7 months ago and took her outside in the front yard where there's no fence and we did this often. When we'd turn to go back inside we'd call her name to come with us then praise her for following. She's about 9 months old now and doesn't run off - and if she does fly out the front door, she doesn't stray, she comes right back in. I don't know if it was coincidence or if it only works if you teach them when they're pups.

Jack Russells love to take off! You should keep him on a leash when walking him and when at home, you need a good fenced in yard and even then, they can climb out or dig under. I go outside with my Jack when he goes out in my fenced yard. I will not take any chances with my Jack, Toby. I love him to much to take any chances. Our dogs are our responsibility.
