does anyone know how long it takes for the 82nd Airborne and the 101st Airborne to deploy? also, which would be a better choice to join? i heard that 101st only does air assault now and that 82nd is the one that actually does paratrooper jumps. by deploy i mean how long does it take for them to be in a combat area from the time they are called to fight?

which way is better? air assault or chute jump? people have told me that they like chute better because you have more time to organize yourself, but others tell me that air assault is better because you can carry more equipment.

I imagine the 82nd, but how long you will never know as those times are secret! However, the 82nd said it would take them 18 hours "to get ready to leave"!

Once a paratrooper is on the ground, he is just a leg, and usually a minimally armed one as other Combat Divisions have a full arsenal of weapons.

The 101st was both Airborne and air assault in Vietnam. I know as I was there! The 1st Brigade Detached of the 101st was in Vietnam along with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. The rest of the 101st, nor the 82nd was in Vietnam in 1966 or1967

Your question is not relevant though as the 82nd was just deployed to Iraq on their 4th tour and the 101st just got back!.

There are different levels of alert and readiness within each division. I was in the 82d and thus don't know much about the 101st. There are small units within the 82d (rotating, of course) that can be in the air within 4 hours of the alert. After that there are units that can be gone within 24 hours and more that can deploy within 48 hours. Arrival in the combat zone depends on the speed of the aircraft and how far they have to travel.

All of this is dependent on how fast the aircraft can land, load and take off from Pope Air Force Base, which is next to Fort Bragg, home of the 82d Airborne division.

An entire divisional rotation takes at least a few months but they could send advanced units as fast as a plane can fly. And its true the 101 is AA and the 82nd is ABN But most travel in humvees these days not too many targets need to be suprised by plane this late in the war on terror.
