I got married 6mths ago and am having my reception next month, with a ceremony and everything. It will be pretty informal since we are legally married, we just couldn't afford the reception right away. my question is, my caterer (which will be buffet-style) said we can do paper plates or china. Is having paper plates kinda tacky? I think it is but would like to hear other opinions. It costs $2 more per person for the china.

Unless it's a super elegant rich person kind of reception (basically, the kind I hate... lol) then go for the paper plates! As a matter of fact, every wedding I've gone to has had paper not china. You can get the paper plates in your wedding colors, and be at ease knowing that they won't get broken and cost you more money.

I have never been to a buffet reception where they used china plates! Those are usually reserved for sit down dinners. At least where I live. I would use a good quality paper or plastic plate.

I think it's a lot more tacky to have another ceremony when you are already married! You can't get married twice, and 6 months is too soon to renew your vows. You should have had the reception way before this. Sorry, but that is just how I feel.

First of all if the people that are coming are really friends and family and love you they are going to be there to see you not to care about what china they may or may not be eating on. I would say that the reception is not a main focus for people as long as the food is good and people get to see you they don't usually care what they are eating on, especially if it is buffet style. Sit down would be another story, but I think if you were already having financial issues I would save the money and enjoy your company. Also you could ask your caterer to forget the plates and silverware and go buy some nice "chinet" plates and silverware. They're sturdy and decent looking without the cost.

Before I paid $2 a plate, I would really look into the type of china or paper plate they were giving you. If it is just the plain white correll, it probably isn't worth it. Also, look into if they are going to wash the plates for you or if they will charge extra. A buffet style works with the paper plates and i don't think it would be tacky. Just went to a wedding with paper plates and it really didn't seem to matter to people, and probably made clean up a lot easier!

Yeah, it's seriously tacky. Since it's a buffet it's also not very good for your guests. Paper plates, and even plastic ones, are just not all that sturdy. I would make a bet that there will be a lot of spills due to shoddy plates if you go w/ paper. I mean, come on, a wedding is a SPECIAL occasion...spend the lousy 2 bucks even if it's just to save yourself from being talked about. And people WILL talk if they are expected to eat a wedding dinner off of a paper plate!

i would say that it depends on what the paper plates look like. just how paper like are they? some are okay others are just rediculous. i think that you should ask to see the plates that would be used, that would maybe help with the decision. however if it were me i'd go with china. its your wedding reception and it might be worth the extra 2 dollars a plate for it. at least to me cuz i only plan on getting married once and i want everything to be special and the best that i can have but thats just me. the best for my special day. hope that helps a little.

No, I do not think it is tacky. Just get some pretty ones that are color co-ordinated with any other decorations you're having. Or you could use the heavy plastic ones that are clear and have a design in them to look like "etched" glass. As for the china, what is the replacement cost per plate in the event a guest breaks one? That's something else you need to check on before you decide to go with the china.

I'm still trying to figure out why your parents didn't pay for the reception right after the wedding and why you had to "save up" for it I like china for small weddings/receptions, but since this is "after the fact" paper plates will do, just make sure they are thick nice ones.

I hate to say it but I think it's very tacky. I think that you must feel the same way or you wouldn't have asked he question. It's your day and you didn't wait 6 months to eat off of paper plates. For heaven sake get the china and have the time of your life!!

I think that the china would probably make it look alot better and maybe not so cheap looking no offense then the paper plates and i dont think 2 dollars more per person is that big of deal unless you plan on having like of people!!!
