First of all, what is the squirrel's problem. Hit by a car? Attacked by a dog or cat? I would do whatever I could to save any animal. However I will not risk getting bitten or clawed by an injured animal. This is stupid. I would call animal control and see if they could help.

Once rescued a baby squirrel form the grips of a cat, poor little thing didn't even have teeth yet, he must have fallen from his nest.
I put him inside my shirt with his head sticking out and took him to one of our vet clinics that has a gentleman who rescues baby squirrels and raises them.
I had to fill out some paper work reason being when the squirrel is old enough to release he usually brings it back to the where he was found.

I ran over a squirrel once. I felt so bad...it was still alive in the road...it's back legs were broke. I had a blanket in my trunk so I grabbed the squirrel up in the blanket (careful not to let it bite me) and took it to the small animal clinic on campus at Texas A&M (where I was going to school) and they euthanized the poor little thing. I still feel bad about that.

I've slammed on my breaks to prevent from hitting one. I have also taken a injured baby squirrel to the wild life rescue.

I once tried to save a newborn rat I found on the street. Bought a cage and bottle-fed it. It died anyway.
