This is what I found. There may have been some attempts anciently as well.

1810-1820
Physicians attempt to operate on the heart, specifically on the pericardium. One of Napoleon's surgeons, the Baron Dominique Jean Larrey, performs the first such operation. Despite the successful surgery on the pericardium, the patient dies within a month. A few other physicians, such as Francisco Romero and Michael Skielderup, attempt similar operations. Most of the patients die.

The earliest operations that can be considered cardiac surgery were limited to the pericardium, and were pioneered by, among others, Francisco Romero,[1] Dominique Jean Larrey, Henry Dalton, and Daniel Hale Williams. The first successful surgery on the heart itself, performed without any complications, was by Dr. Ludwig Rehn of Frankfurt, Germany, who repaired a stab wound to the right ventricle on September 7, 1896
