I would agree. It sounds like he isnt taking in enough protein both before and after he works out. He could also be over training too.

As a general rule I would suggest 20-40 grams of protein an hour before working out and then another 20-40 grams of protein after weight lifting. A simple solution for the lack of potassium is a banana immediately after the workout.

What is most important that if he is a serious weight lifter, then he needs to consume 15-20 calories per pound of bodyweight. And that needs to be taken throughout the day. The 24 hours prior to each workout is more important than just what is consumed an hour or two before exercise.

It's a protein and potassium deficiency.

The muscles cramp when they break down - ie: the body eats the protein out of them. Over exercising means your body needs EXTRA protein to fuel the muscles.

Steak and bananas.

he's either over-exerting himself or not consuming enough electrolyes in his diet, during or outside of his exercise routine. this is esp key if you're exercising for over an hour, you lose a lot of salt and potassium, so try to have a sports drink handy. other than that, try to get a varitey of fruits/veggies as well as yogurt throughout the day.
