Im doing some research on the excretory system and i was wondering what would happen if somebody ignored the feeling of having to go use the washroom for a long period of time(say a couple weeks if even possible).Would they get sick?

If you suppress the feeling of defecation frequently, you may suffer from constipation. The longer stool stays in the bowels, more fluids are absorbed --> leading to hard stools. If you are always constipated, you may develop hemorrhoids or rectal bleeding. Contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence that "toxins" accumulate when bowel movements are infrequent or that constipation leads to cancer.

The longer you resist the bowel movement the worse the things that can happen. Eventually the muscles in your colon would reverse their direction or cease to work properly. Eventually the waste would build up to a toxic level if the pain from the packed bowel doesn't kill you. If you try this you will die or at least suffer major organ system failures due to the toxins that would build up in your system. My advice would be to not try this.

They become constipated and will be nauseated and vomit, and the abdomen becomes distended.
I work with the elderly and debilitated and if not closely monitored they get constipation due to inactivity and poor fluid intake, and some are not able to tell when they need to toilet. So a record is kept of bowel movements, and stool softners/laxatives are used when needed, and fluids are encouraged.

yes they would - it happened to a friend of mine. SHe was constipated for 10 days and ended up in the hospital for a week. Your intestines get full of waste basically.

You'd become constipated. Then you'd probably need an enema to fix the problem.

You'd probably also feel like crap (pardon the pun) because that stuff is not meant to stay inside.

If heald for too long they can die. It's toxic to the body/bloodstream. If a person is unable to for too long or have Diverticulitis it is also deadly. Diverticulitis is also what killed alot of men during the civil war era.

Eventually, you wouldn't have a choice...it will come out one way or the other. Once everything has backed up so far into your intestines and such, it will find a way to come out. It will either come out the regular way, or you will "vomit" it out. And that would not be pleasant.

it's called toxiemia... thou I doubt I spelled it right,.... still I would suggest you avoid it considering its the process by which the toxins in your bowels slowly leach into your system due to not getting rid of them, and guess what... it can be fatal, thou it does take some time to kill you.

Eventually, you are going to go, no matter how hard you try to hold it in. Try all you want, but you will probably end up crapping your pants. Nature will always win out. Have fun and good luck. Let us know how it comes out!... lol.
