I have a friend that has a ShihTzu dog and she is getting ready to have her puppies but this is the first time my friend has been through this and doesn't know what to expect or anything else.......the dogs temperature has gone down and she's been irritable and just acting completely different. So we were wondering how close she might be to having the babies.

yes she is getting ready to have the puppies. if she goes more than 4hrs after she starts real labor PLEASE call you vet. make sure that she has a dry and draft free area to have the puppies. it need to be a big box or a larger crate so there is room for her and her puppies. I would get on the internet right now go the akc.org site or find one on dog give birth right now.

You need to set up her birthing area in the room which she is most comfortable in. SHE needs to pick the place, not you. If she isn't comfortable with the environment, she will delay the birth (yes, she can do that, to a certain point) which could be harmful to her and the puppies. So, set up a bunch of old towels in the room she is most comfortable in, and she can to the rest. You should monitor the birth to make sure that with every puppy, the placenta comes out as well. Sometimes dogs cut the chord before the placenta comes out, and if the placenta doesn't come out it can form a serious infection and will need to be surgically removed, otherwise the dog will most likely die. This is rare, but a possibility, so just monitor. Naturally, the dog will eat the placenta and clean most of it up by herself, BUT it will be bloody so definitely lay lots of towels out and have extra on hand just in case. It may take the puppies a minute or two to take a breath, but make sure they DO start breathing. Some smaller ones (your shih tzu's will be small) may need some assistance - mother dog's licking is usually all the assistance the puppy needs but if the mother is preoccupied you may need to get in there with a small rag and gently rub and clean the puppy yourself. Good luck!
