Actually it should be looked at after you wipe, not only because you can see whether you have wiped enough to avoid skid marks in your underwear. The main reason you can see whether your stool has any signs of blood, whether black or red. It's good to check because colon cancer can come at any age and it is a silent killer, unless you check. Early detection is important.

I can usually (not always) tell the difference. Soft ones spread. When it slams shut, the first wipe is just checking. 20 times? I thought you were a skinny guy.
