Do NOT download codec packs. They tend to mess up your PC instead by installing duplicate and conflicting codecs.

AVI files can use a variety of codecs, and sounds like you ran into one that you don't have a codec for. Download GSpot from videohelp.com/tools and run it on your AVI file to figure out what codec it uses, then download that codec and install that codec ALONE. That way you don't mess up your PC with a bunch of other codecs that you probably will NEVER need.

AVI files can easily be played on your WMP. You just have to make sure you do the following things. First, make sure that your WMP is set up to be your default media player. You can check this by going into the START menu and going to SET PROGRAMS AND DEFAULTS and then go to the CUSTOMS MENU and click WMP to make it the default player. Second, ensure that you have the proper codes downloaded to play the specific file. Sometimes the encoding techniques on certain avi files require you to have an additional codec to play the file. The best place to get these are www.wmplugins.com. There are two to download to ensure that your file plays correctly. An Xvid codec and a Divx codec. After you install them correctly, try to play your avi file again.

You should be able to play those files normally with it, but since that isn't working you might want to do the following:
-Go to google.com
-Search: .avi codec for WMA (windows media player)
-Look through the results and find one that applies
-Make sure its free (they usually are) and download it
